He had an unlikely passenger.
Published on Oct 3, 2025 at 6:08 PM
Tuesday morning this week started like any other for Stijn François. He woke up at home in British Columbia, Canada, got ready for the day and then left for work in his car.
What François didn’t know at the time was that he was about to change a little stranger’s life forever.
A few miles into his commute, François spotted something on the corner of the hood of his vehicle. He parks under a tree at home, so he figured it’d come from that.
“I thought it was a leaf at first,” François told The Dodo. “Or a pine cone.”
He was wrong.

François studied the mystery object for a few moments as he sped along.
“Then it stuck its little antennae up,” he said.
Turns out, perched upon François’ hood was a snail who, no doubt, had never before traveled at such a high rate of speed.
“It didn’t move the whole drive. I was hoping it didn’t fly off,” François said, admitting he was rooting for his slimy little stowaway. “I may have even driven a little slower than normal.”

By the time François pulled up to work about 6 kilometers from home, the little snail was still firmly planted on the car’s hood. And that’s when François got to thinking.
“Google says that a snail will potentially travel between 100 meters and 1 kilometer per year, and given they only live 2-3 years, this gives them a possible range of just 3 kilometers. This one, then, might be a record-breaking snail,” François wrote in a post.
Though they’d ended up in a familiar spot for François, it was a distant, exotic new locale for the snail.

François was reluctant to intervene in case the snail wanted to stick around for the return trip back home when he finished work. But after returning to his car hours later at the end of his shift, the snail was nowhere to be seen.
“I allowed it the dignity to continue its journey alone,” François said.
All the snail left behind was a slime trail leading down the side of his car.
“I did a double check that I couldn’t see it before I left,” François said.

In some ways, it had been just another workday for François, but in another, it was far from routine. The future and fate of a little animal’s path of life had been altered forever — and with any luck, for the better.
“I hope its journey ended in a good spot for it,” François said

Woman Shocked To Find Unexpected Stowaway In Amazon Package
She noticed two eyes staring back at her 👀
The other day, Ally Romaine was unpacking the olive tree she’d ordered from Amazon. As she removed the final layer of bubble wrap and admired her new plant, she noticed someone staring back at her.
Upon further inspection, Romaine realized that a stowaway had hitched a ride on an Amazon truck from Florida all the way to her New York apartment. Sitting there on the tree was a little frog.

She and the frog, both in a state of shock, just stared at each other for a little while.
Once Romaine’s initial surprise wore off, she gathered up some leaf cuttings and made a makeshift habitat for the frog. Based on online research, she determined that the stowaway was a Cuban tree frog.
A phone call with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed the amphibian was, in fact, a Cuban tree frog, an invasive species in Florida. They informed Romaine that because the frog is invasive, she could choose to dispose of her. But for Romaine, an animal lover, that simply wasn’t an option.

“There was never a moment where it was like, the frog is … going anywhere else,” Romaine told The Dodo. “All my animals have come to me … I have not gone out to find an animal. They’ve all come to my doorstep, quite literally.”
Even though Romaine has never had a pet frog before, she decided to welcome the frog as a new member of her family. Her boyfriend was totally on board — though he didn’t have much of a choice.
“He knows it’s either him or the frog,” Romaine said.

She decided to name her Olive Bezos. She set up a comfortable enclosure for Olive and fed her plenty of crickets. It took a little while for Olive to adjust to her new environment, but now that she’s been with Romaine for a month and a half, she’s completely settled in.
“She would hide a lot for the first week or so,” Romaine said. “And then after that first week, she’s been awesome.”
As frogs are considered a good luck symbol in many cultures, Romaine thinks of Olive as an unexpected blessing.
“I joke that she’s been my lucky streak,” Romaine said.

The good fortune clearly goes both ways — Olive is lucky that she ended up getting delivered to such a generous family. Thanks to Romaine, not only was Olive’s life spared, but she’s now thriving in her new home.
