“I was certainly glad he was okay!”

It was 3 a.m. this past September when a patron visiting a gas station in Aurora, Illinois, heard a strange noise echoing from behind an ice machine outside the store. Unsure what to do, the worried passerby called the Aurora Police Department for help.
Officers soon arrived at the scene and surveyed the area, trying to locate the source of the sound. It wasn’t long before they found who they were looking for — a months-old kitten was stuck behind the ice machine, calling out for help.

The only way to access the kitten was to move the ice machine, and the only way to move the ice machine was to remove all of the ice inside. Luckily, the rescuers were up to the task. Their fingers went slightly numb as they raced to haul over 1,000 pounds of ice out of the machine and onto the parking lot.

“It went quicker than we thought it would!” a representative from the police department told The Dodo.
Once the ice was removed, officers used a dolly to scooch the heavy machine just far enough out from the wall so that they could grab the cat.
“Surprisingly, the cat stayed right there and didn’t try to run away,” the representative said. “I reached in and was able to pull him right out. I was certainly glad he was okay!”

Rescuers moved the cat to a carrier and brought him to Aurora Animal Care & Control, where team members named him Cadence.

Safe at the rescue facility, Cadence received necessary vaccinations and care. Today, he’s still recuperating at the shelter, preparing to meet his forever family.
“[He’s] doing well,” the representative said. “Hopefully all this attention has brought someone who would like to adopt him.”

Tiny Puppy Curls Up By Dumpsters Waiting For Someone To Notice He’s Not Trash
“This particular dumpster is way out in the country … No one could have seen him, possibly.”
The other day, a Yazoo City, Mississippi, resident was taking out his trash when he saw a tiny puppy huddled between the dumpsters. The little pup couldn’t have been more than a few weeks old.

Knowing the dog needed immediate attention, the man called Lisa Reams, founder and president of Saving Grace Animal Rescue. As soon as Reams heard about the puppy, she rushed over to help.
“This particular dumpster is way out in the country,” Reams told The Dodo. “There are, like, no houses nearby. It’s pretty secluded out there where he was. No one could have seen him, possibly.”
Thankfully, Reams arrived just in time to save the baby. When she tried to approach him, he was so terrified that he ran under the dumpster, and Reams had to reach beneath it to grab him.

“It just really hurt my heart, because he was so tiny and left there with no food, no water,” Reams said.
Reams quickly realized that the dog was covered in ticks and fleas and had a belly full of worms. Once she got him home, she gave the 3-pound puppy a long bath, hydrated him and started him on the medical treatments he desperately needed.
The next day, Reams returned to the dumpster to make sure she hadn’t accidentally overlooked any of Oscar’s family members. After a thorough check, it was clear he’d been dumped all by himself.
After some veterinary care and just a few days with Reams, the dog perked up. Reams was delighted to see him start playing and affectionately licking her face. She decided to name him Oscar, after the famous trash-dwelling muppet.

“Instead of Oscar the Grouch, he’s Oscar the rescue puppy,” Reams said.
It’s now been over a week since Reams rescued Oscar, and he’s already thriving.
“He’s eating great,” Reams said. “He eats three times a day. He loves his toys.”
Oscar will stay with Reams until he’s vaccinated, neutered and strong enough to be adopted.

While Oscar may have been named after someone who lives in a trash can, thanks to Reams and the man who spotted him, he’ll only live in warm, safe homes from now on.
