But still she was ignored …

This is Peanut. She’s an affectionate, playful pittie who arrived at Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) when she was 7 years old.

Peanut was transferred from another shelter, so the HSBC staff and volunteers don’t know much about her backstory. What they do know is that she’s adorable.

“Despite it all, she’s remained silly, sweet, and full of love,” HSBC wrote on Facebook.

The HSBC staff and volunteers quickly learned that Peanut’s absolute favorite thing in the world is stuffies. They noticed that whenever they handed her a stuffie, she would hold onto it for hours, never letting go. It seemed to bring her comfort in the overwhelming shelter environment.

As soon as the staff discovered Peanut’s love for stuffies, they made sure she had as many as her heart desired. Whether the toys were in the shape of a hamburger, a crocodile, a bone or a lamb, Peanut didn’t care — she loved them all.

“We always try and make sure she has a variety to choose from,” HSBC said in a video for The Dodo.

While Peanut loved holding her stuffies in her kennel, she also liked to take them on her excursions. Wherever Peanut went, her stuffies went, too.

“She starts out her days by carrying her stuffie out with her while she goes on her potty break,” HSBC said.

Despite Peanut’s delightful personality, she kept getting overlooked by potential adopters simply because of her age.

“Peanut has been with us for some time, and we truly don’t understand why,” HSBC wrote on Facebook. “She greets everyone at her kennel door with pure joy, always ready to make a new friend.”

HSBC decided to post a video of Peanut holding her stuffies to their social platforms, hoping it might encourage people to take a chance on her. It worked. Soon after, someone came into the shelter and said they wanted to bring Peanut home.

As Peanut was preparing to leave HSBC, the staff members made sure she had a stuffie for the road.

“Before leaving our shelter, she picked up one last toy from us,” HSBC said. “And she went straight to greet her new family and brother.”

Adorable ‘Monster’ Goes Searching For Friends At Dog Adoption Event

“When people first see Citrus, most of them will do a double take.”

By Caitlin Jill Anders

Every year, The Tucson Dog Magazine sponsors an adoption event in the Tucson area called Dogtoberfest. Rescues and other animal organizations in the area come together to help get as many dogs adopted as possible — and some other animals who definitely aren’t dogs.

Southern Arizona Reptile Rescue & Education was one of the rescues in attendance at the event, and they brought someone along to be an ambassador and greeter for their booth. While he looks a little like a monster at first glance, Citrus was one of the friendliest pets at the whole event.

“When people first see Citrus, most of them will do a double take,” Cressi Brown, founder and executive director of Southern Arizona Reptile Rescue & Education, told The Dodo. “It is unusual to see a large [3-foot] foot lizard on someone’s shoulder or walking on a leash. Citrus doesn’t mind the attention at all and soaks up the scratches and pets. He makes a wonderful ambassador, and his sweet personality helps us show people that reptiles are not only smarter and more intelligent than they think, but also make amazing pets.”

Citrus is an Argentine black-and-white tegu who was rescued from a citrus field in Florida, where he was found alone, clearly abandoned. He now has a home and is living the good life — but that didn’t stop him from going up to potential families at the event to introduce himself.

Under the watchful eye of his friends, Citrus wandered away from his booth at one point, taking a break from being an ambassador. He began exploring the event on his own, and watching a giant lizard walking around an adoption event was quite a sight to see.

While he may look scary to some people, Citrus is actually anything but. All he wanted that day was to make friends and to remind people that lizards and reptiles of all kinds are actually pretty awesome.

“Citrus is a very friendly lizard,” Brown said. “He enjoys human companionship and is very mellow and curious.”

Lots of fun was had at Dogtoberfest that day, and everyone got to learn about all the different animals available for adoption by the best teachers — including Citrus.
