“He ‘meeped’ like a muppet, he was so excited, so he got the name Beaker!”

When a man living in Detroit returned home one day and noticed that someone had dumped a chained dog in a neighboring backyard, he frantically began calling around for someone to help. Luckily, Rebel Dogs Detroit took the call and sent a volunteer, Tiffany Perkins, out to investigate. She had no idea what to expect when she first arrived — but as soon as she saw Beaker, her heart just melted.

“Beaker was timid and cowered behind the garage to hide,” Perkins told The Dodo. “He peeked out the side as I started calling for him. As I got closer, his tail started wagging. Then he pushed his weight against us for petting him — and seemed to be visibly relieved. He ‘meeped’ like a muppet, he was so excited, so he got the name Beaker!”
After being chained up and abandoned, Beaker was understandably a little nervous at first, but as soon as he realized Perkins was there to help him, he completely relaxed and was so excited to meet his new best friend.

“When the chain was untethered from the garage, he dropped to the ground for belly rubs and kisses and playful chaos,” Perkins said.
Unfortunately, the chain that Beaker had around him was stuck on his neck, so Perkins quickly rushed him to the vet to get him checked out. While they waited for Beaker’s surgery to remove the chain, Perkins took advantage of the extra time to give Beaker all the love he’d never had before, and the sweet dog appreciated it so much.

“We had lots of bonding time in the car waiting for his surgery for 5+ hours,” Perkins said. “He was napping with his head in my lap after a while.”
Even after everything Beaker had been through, all he wanted was to be loved — and finally, his wish had come true.

Beaker is now healing from his surgery in his foster home and is just the happiest dog anyone has ever met. For Beaker, it doesn’t seem to matter what happened to him in the past. What matters is where he is now and all the new friends he’s made who care about him and are making sure he’s happy and safe.
“He’s learning how to be an indoor dog with unconditional love in his foster home,” Perkins said.

Beaker is currently looking for his forever home and would love a home with another playful, energetic dog who can continue to show him the ropes and become his best buddy. As soon as Beaker laid eyes on his rescuers, he knew he was finally safe, and he’s so excited to find the forever family he deserves.

A ‘Weird’ Feeling Leads Rescuer To An Abandoned Box With A Note
She was about to drive away, then …
The other day, a volunteer at Room 8 Memorial Cat Foundation stopped by the rescue late at night to check on some kitties who needed around-the-clock care. As she was preparing to head home at around 4 or 5 a.m., she got in her car and almost drove away.
But something stopped her.
“I was going to go home, got in the car, and then I got kind of, like, a weird feeling,” Cat Ouellette, the volunteer, told The Dodo.
Ouellette assumed she was probably just being paranoid, but she decided to get out and check if one of the cats had somehow escaped the rescue. What she found instead was a taped-up box sitting on the ground near the passenger side of her car.

On top of the box, someone had left a note explaining that they’d found a litter of kittens but couldn’t keep them because they have dogs.
It’s unfortunately not uncommon for people to abandon boxes of kittens outside Room 8 Memorial Cat Foundation. Still, it’s always a bit jarring to find, especially in the middle of the night.
“People try to do their best, but we try to do our best, too,” Ouellette said. “I’d rather see it there than by a trash can.”

Heartbreakingly, Ouellette found that one of the kittens had passed away. She rushed the seven other babies into the rescue, where she had all the supplies she needed to take care of them.
“I brought them in, fed them immediately, made them some great formula and just did a little physical exam,” Ouellette said.
When kittens are that young, they have huge appetites. All seven babies happily gulped down the formula Ouellette gave them.

It’s now been almost two weeks since Ouellette rescued the kittens, and they’re all doing great. Several Room 8 Memorial Cat Foundation volunteers have been taking turns caring for the adorable little fluff balls, whose personalities are just starting to emerge.
These kittens’ story serves as a great reminder of the importance of spaying and neutering pets as well as doing TNR (trap-neuter-release) for stray cats.

“This could have been prevented if we just got this mom fixed,” Ouellette said. “That’s where the problem starts.”
In three months, once the kitties are all fixed and vaccinated, they’ll be available for adoption. Until then, Ouellette is going to enjoy soaking up their rambunctious kitten energy.

“All I want them to know is how loved they are and just hope for the best and do what I can,” Ouellette said.
