“She just wanted pets and to give kisses to anyone willing to receive them” 🥹

On a recent early morning stroll in Key West, Florida, Delaney and her fiancé, Carl, were admiring a docked shrimp boat when they suddenly noticed a large pink sign. The sign, positioned above one of the boat’s rectangular portholes, displayed four unexpected words.
“It said, ‘Kissing booth, call Luna,’” Delaney told The Dodo.

Delaney and Carl lit up. As animal lovers, they constantly look for dogs and cats on their vacations, especially when they have to leave their beloved pups behind. And moments before discovering the sign, they’d spotted an adorable dog sunbathing on the ship’s stern.
“I put two and two together and realized that it was to get closer to the dog!” Delaney said.

Delaney and Carl did as the sign instructed, calling out Luna’s name and hoping to be met with a familiar face. Almost instantly, the sweet black-and-white pup’s face appeared in the porthole, and she couldn’t contain her excitement.
“She was so excited to see people, she didn’t even care about the treat we had for her,” Delaney said. “She just wanted pets and to give kisses to anyone willing to receive them.”

Luna was thrilled to have customers at her kissing booth, and the visiting couple was overjoyed to meet her. They stayed with Luna for nearly 10 minutes, introducing her to Delaney’s sister and best friend, while talking to her dad about her origin story.
They soon learned that Luna had been adopted from the Humane Society of St. Lucie County., and she was now living her best life in the Florida Keys.

Despite her difficult past, Luna couldn’t be happier with how her life turned out. When she’s not relaxing on a boat in a sunny vacation destination with her loving dad, she’s meeting new people and showering them with affection.
“Luna was so excited to see people, she immediately started giving kisses and tried to lay down to get a belly rub,” Delaney said. “I was a little bit nervous she might fall out of the hole, but she is a professional, and I’m sure she does this all the time.”

After 10 minutes of love, Delaney and her family had to continue with the day’s activities and sadly said goodbye to Luna. Their time with the sweet pup may have been brief, but the unexpected encounter turned out to be the highlight of their trip.
“We are very close with our dogs, so the happenstance to stumble across such an adorably sweet dog like Luna on vacation was a blessing and made us so happy,” Delaney said.

‘Feral’ Cow Never Let Anyone Touch Her Until She Made Her First Friend
“Seeing that they trusted us seemed to build her trust in us.”
When Happy Compromise Farm + Sanctuary needed to relocate out of Oregon, they found the perfect property in New York — and were surprised to learn that it came with a single cow named Miriam.

“The New York property was a meat CSA before we moved the sanctuary there, and the owners offered us Miriam when they weren’t able to load her up for slaughter,” Eryn Leavens, executive director of Happy Compromise Farm + Sanctuary, told The Dodo. “We jumped at the chance to take her in as our first cow resident. When we arrived at the new property after a cross-country trip with 100 rescued animals, she was the only animal on the property. It felt like she had been waiting for us to arrive.”
Unfortunately, Miriam’s first five years of life weren’t easy. She’d been sleeping in the woods and didn’t have the greatest relationship with people. She was terrified of her new humans when they first arrived, and they didn’t blame her. They were determined, however, to prove to her that she was safe now.
“Her only experience with humans had been terrible, so she assumed we would be the same,” Leavens said. “However, she was very interested in the other animals we brought with us, particularly the alpacas. Seeing that they trusted us seemed to build her trust in us.”

Miriam’s new humans spent hours and hours putting in the work to win her over, and it slowly paid off. They made lots of promises about how her new life would look, and one by one, they made those promises come true.

“When we first met Miriam, we promised her that she would eventually have cow friends and that we would get her a shelter,” Leavens said. “She had been sleeping in the woods for the first five years of her life, so our first big move was to buy her a shelter. A few months later, we received a request for help with a two-year-old Jersey cow named Penelope … We said we would take her, and she became Miriam’s best friend immediately.”
Miriam absolutely adored all of the other animals at the sanctuary, but finally having another cow was incredibly special. She and Penelope were inseparable from the moment they met — and still are to this day.

Now, Miriam has a whole herd of rescued cows living with her at the sanctuary, and she couldn’t be happier. She’s learned to love and feel safe around her humans, too, and follows them around constantly. She went from being scared and alone to having more love than she knows what to do with, and her humans are so thrilled they could make her dreams come true.
