The cat was a little confused đ
Published on Sep 26, 2025 at 5:47 PM
About a year ago, Franzlei Yuson welcomed a cat named Kimchi into her family. Yuson was delighted to find that Kimchi instantly got along well with her two Shih Tzus, Koa and Kumi.
Over the past year, Kimchi, Koa and Kumi have grown even more comfortable with each other and have developed a close friendship.

â[Kimchi] will cuddle up with them sometimes,â Yuson told The Dodo. âTheyâll just sit there together on the couch.â
But the other day, Kimchi started hissing at the two dogs, seemingly out of the blue. For a second, Yuson was perplexed. Then she realized what had changed: Koa and Kumi had just gotten groomed.
About once or twice a year, Yusonâs husband will fully shave off Koa and Kumiâs fur to get their skin extra clean and give them a reset. Because the dogs get shaved so infrequently, Kimchi didnât know what was going on.

âThat was the first time she saw them like that, looking completely different,â Yuson said.
It quickly became clear to Yuson that Kimchi didnât recognize Koa and Kumi without their fur and was disturbed by the presence of who she thought were two âintruders.â

â[S]he did the angry cat position and hissed at them,â Yuson said. âAnd sheâs never done [that], ever, even when she first came.â
Meanwhile, Koa and Kumi didnât understand why Kimchi was so upset. They rolled around playfully in front of her, unaware that anything was wrong.
âThe dogs didnât even have any idea what was going on,â Yuson said.

Kimchi, feeling deeply unsettled by the two strange dogs whoâd appeared in her home, isolated herself in the guest room.
âShe hid upstairs for four hours,â Yuson said. âWe didnât force her to come out or anything because I felt so bad. Even though it was funny, I felt kind of bad.â
Eventually, Kimchi emerged from the guest room and warily approached Koa and Kumi. She sniffed them a few times, which helped her realize these dogs werenât strangers, they were her siblings.

â[W]ithin just those ten minutes, she was back to normal, once she realized it was them,â Yuson said.

Kimchi, Koa and Kumi have gone back to peacefully coexisting. But only time will tell whether Kimchi will react the same way the next time they get shaved.

Shelter Dog On Euthanasia List Begs Volunteer To Take Her Home Forever
âI couldnât stop thinking about her âŚâ
By Ashley Ortiz
On her way to her local animal shelter a few weeks ago, volunteer Madeline Smith rechecked her list of dogs to be cared for. The list, consisting of available dogs at the shelter, was part of Smithâs routine to ensure that she could help as many pups as possible in her short time there.
But at the very end of her shift that day, one dog who wasnât on the list suddenly caught her attention.

âI was actually walking down the ward to leave for the day when an act of God turned my head and made me look at her,â Smith told The Dodo. âShe immediately got up from her bed and jumped up with a waggy tail to greet me!â
The dog, named Maya, felt immediately safe with Smith. Standing on her hind legs, Maya placed her front paws on the kennel bars and, with the sweetest look on her face, begged Smith to take her home.

Smith nearly melted when she locked eyes with Maya, but she had only gone to the shelter to volunteer. With a trip coming up, the 54-time foster mom wasnât ready to take another dog in at the moment. But when she got home that night, all she could think about was Maya.
âI couldnât stop thinking about her and knew I had to foster her,â Smith said. âWhen she ended up on the euthanasia list, that was it!â

As soon as Smith saw Mayaâs devastating update, she decided to save the sweet girl. Since she was already on vacation, and time was limited to pull Maya from the shelter, a fellow volunteer named Amairany dropped everything to help.
Amairany agreed to foster Maya for a few days until Smith returned from her trip, and Maya couldnât have been happier.
âShe settled in great and became friends with Amairanyâs 6-year-old son, too!â Smith said. âItâs a lot easier being in rescue with the community that surrounds it!â

Before long, Smith returned home and officially became Mayaâs foster mom. Mayaâs foster dad and two foster siblings â a cat named Barry and a dog named Margot â fell instantly in love with her, and the feeling was mutual.
âShe fit in so seamlessly with our fam and felt like sheâd been here all along!â Smith said.

For the next month or so, Maya snuggled with her family daily while she underwent heartworm treatment. When she was finally healthy enough to return to the shelter and be listed for adoption, Smith was faced with an impossible decision.
Sheâd already fostered 54 pups, all of whom had gone on to find loving homes, and she knew for sure that she wanted to continue fostering, which meant she couldnât keep Maya. But Mayaâs presence made her rethink everything.
âMy husband had to bear with me crying about it for weeks, and deep down, he knew I was never really at peace with letting her go,â Smith said. âI once told him that whether we kept her or sent her, I just wanted it to be his fault (lol), so he made the decision so I didnât have to.â

On Motherâs Day, Smithâs husband surprised her with a heartfelt card and Mayaâs official adoption papers. She and Maya were beyond thrilled with his decision.
âHeâs such a good man, and Iâm so glad we have our Maya now!â Smith said.

Itâs been a few months since Mayaâs adoption, and life couldnât be better for the sweet pup. Sheâs still obsessed with her fur sister, Margot, and, although Barry has since passed away, she loves visiting his memorial shelf.
Sheâs also preparing to welcome a human baby brother soon by cuddling with her momâs belly every day.

The couple canât get enough of Maya, and are constantly reminded why she, as their 55th foster dog, was their first foster fail. Adopting a foster pup was never a part of their plans, but now they wouldnât have it any other way.
âIf you can just let the first [foster] go ⌠it gets easier each time, until a Maya comes into your life,â Smith said. âThen, youâll know.â
