When Officer Michael Ely arrived at a home that caught fire in Aurora, Illinois, he began searching for anyone who might still be inside. He was about to declare that the house was empty … until he saw a leash hanging in the kitchen.
He immediately began searching the house for the pup, Oakley, and found him behind a doggy gate in the bedroom. Officer Ely took down the gate and tried to grab him. Instead, Oakley took off running down the hallway.
Officer Ely was frustrated, unsure of where Oakley was going. The pup looked back to make sure the officer was following him, then swiftly led him to the kitchen. He stopped directly under his leash and patiently waited for Officer Ely to catch on.

“You’re a good boy,” Officer Ely said to Oakley in a video of the rescue.
Oakley knew they needed to get out of the house. He also knew that he couldn’t leave the house without his leash. He did what needed to be done as quickly as he could, and Officer Ely was immediately touched by the sweet dog and his bravery.
“He was surprised but happy that the dog was so well trained,” the Aurora Police Department told The Dodo. “It definitely made it easier to get the dog to safety when Oakley basically walked himself out!”
With Oakley all leashed up, the pair quickly left the house and headed outside. The department contacted Oakley’s family to let them know that he was OK, and they couldn’t have been happier to know their beloved pup was safe.
The family told the Aurora Police Department how they’d adopted Oakley as a puppy from Players for Pits four years earlier. He loves snuggling, snoring, sunbathing and eating peanut butter. He’s so loved, and his family will be forever grateful to Officer Ely and everyone else who was involved in saving his life.
Oakley and his family are now in temporary housing while their home gets cleaned up. While everyone is a little shaken up, they’re all safe, including Oakley, and that’s what truly matters.

Shelter Pup Offers Blankie To Everyone Who Passes His Kennel
He needed someone to take a chance on him 🥺
The other day, a volunteer at Detroit Animal Care & Control named Chelsea Grey was walking around the shelter when a pittie named Eamon stopped her in her tracks.
Eamon was sitting calmly at the front of his kennel, making eye contact with everyone who passed him. He was holding a blanket in his mouth and appeared to be offering it to everyone in his proximity.
In the hectic shelter environment, perhaps the blanket also served as a source of reassurance for the quiet dog.
“I think maybe it’s a little bit of a comfort thing,” Grey told The Dodo.
Grey learned that Eamon had been brought to the rescue as a stray. As soon as he arrived, the rescue’s staff and volunteers had deemed him “the derpiest little guy” because his eyes were always slightly crossed.
When Grey had the chance to visit with Eamon outside his kennel, she realized he loved toys just as much as he loved blankets.
“The entire time I had him out, he was holding a toy,” Grey said. “I tried to see if I could get him to drop the toy by giving him a different toy, but then he just carried two toys.”
As Grey and Eamon played, she got to know his sweet personality.
“He’s silly,” Grey said. “He’s a funny little guy. He was chill, too.”
Grey posted a video of Eamon on her TikTok, hoping someone might fall in love with him the way she had and want to take him home.
Grey’s TikTok ended up reaching over 500,000 viewers, each one representing someone whose heart had been stolen by Eamon. One of those viewers thought he was so cute that they decided to come into the shelter with their family to meet him.
The family who visited with Eamon realized he was even more adorable in person. They decided then and there that they just had to take him home.
Eamon’s on a foster-to-adopt track, which means that if all goes well, his new family will be his forever family. Eamon’s excited to not only get to know his new parents but also the pittie they previously adopted from the same shelter.
As usual, while Eamon was getting ready to leave the rescue, he had a toy in his mouth. Now that he has loving parents and a new pittie sister, he’ll always have someone to share his toys and blankies with.
