“He’s a no muss, no fuss kind of guy.”

Naco is an American pit bull terrier mix who loves kiddie pools. His long, pink tongue hangs out when he smiles, and sunbathing is his favorite pastime. Naco is 9 years old and potty trained.
He’s also lived in a shelter for more than 2,500 days.

Naco first arrived at the Animal Defense League (ADL) of Texas in 2018. Staff named him after Nacogdoches Road, where he’d been found wandering. No microchip, no injuries, just a lonely pup searching for a home.
“There’s a lot of dogs just like him out there that have just come and gone so much quicker,” Cheryl Frawley, a long-time volunteer with ADL, told The Dodo. “He’s a no muss, no fuss kind of guy.”
By that, Frawley means Naco enjoys his downtime. “That’s his favorite thing,” Frawley said. “Just go in a yard, lay out, sun himself.” Naco is also a champ at independent play. As long as he has a spot to call his own, where he can go rest whenever he needs it, he’s a happy camper.

Though Naco has never been fostered or adopted, there is one volunteer who hosts Naco for long weekends. The volunteer’s two dogs spend a few days with a family member while Naco gets to experience life outside the ADL with a human, in a home.
During these stays, Frawley said Naco basks in the luxury of companionship. He doesn’t chew on shoes or destroy sofas. He definitely thrives as the only pet in a household, without small kids, which could be part of the reason he’s been at the ADL for almost seven years.

Frawley acknowledges concerns many adopters have, but adds that Naco isn’t aggressive with other dogs at the shelter.
“We have chain-link fences,” she said. “He goes up and greets the dogs. I’ve had all different dogs … he goes up and sniffs at them. If it’s a girl, he does this little cute whimper thing.” Then Naco trots off to play with toys or find a human willing to wrestle, which he loves.

Adaptability is another of Naco’s super powers. “Me, I don’t want to wrestle,” Frawley said. “So he doesn’t wrestle … He changes his play style for me.”
Naco even has a unique bark for the people he knows best at the shelter. “I can know who’s coming by the little bark,” Frawley said. “I find this really cute.”
Last year, Naco went viral for spending six years in a shelter — Newsweek even covered his story — and he still hasn’t found a forever home.
The only other reason Frawley can think of that might keep Naco at the shelter is his strong pull on the leash. But even that improves the further from the kennels he gets.
“He’s strong on the leash at first because he’s excited,” Frawley said, noting this is no different from other dogs at the ADL, but Naco might look more intimidating. He’s muscular and weighs about 70 pounds.

But Naco happily wears a harness on walks with Frawley, who has no trouble with him.
At the end of the day, no one at the ADL understands why Naco has been a resident as long as he has. This playful, happy boy deserves a home away from the kennel. He’s not particular, he doesn’t have allergies, he’s just a bully breed looking for love.

“If somebody you know has a house with a yard, that would be awesome for him,” Frawley said. “You could just go sit with your coffee on the patio while he lounges in the sun because, like I said, he’s really funny about that.”
If you’re interested in adopting Naco, you can reach out to the Animal Defense League of Texas through their website.

Shelter Volunteer Finds Bucket Of Puppies — Then Learns The Sad Truth
“Little teeny, tiny babies. Left like trash” 💔
By Ashley Ortiz
After a long shift at her local animal shelter the other day, volunteer Mary Nakiso was leaving the building when she discovered an unusual object just outside the door. A blue bucket she’d never seen before had suddenly appeared, and the contents inside instantly broke her heart.
“[T]iny, helpless puppies [were] dumped behind the shelter, up against the wall, inside a blue bucket,” Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, wrote on Facebook. “Little teeny, tiny babies. Left like trash.”

The puppies popped up to meet Nakiso’s gaze, standing on their hind legs but unable to jump over the edge. Nakiso had no idea who’d left the puppies or how long they’d been there, but she knew she needed to save them immediately.
You can see her discover the puppies here:
Without skipping a beat, Nakiso scooped up the babies and shuttled them to Camino Pet Hospital, where they received thorough medical exams. Sadly, the puppies quickly began showing signs of parvovirus, and one of them appeared to have a torn cornea.

The puppies, named Wonton and Beetles, were in a vulnerable state. But thankfully, they were in the perfect place to receive the care they needed.
“[T]hey’ll finally be safe, warm and cared for,” Hall wrote. “[S]weet little angels … everything’s going to be okay now.”

It’s been a few days since their rescue, and while the babies are still on the mend, they continue to improve each day. The tan puppy, Wonton, has been responding well to his parvovirus treatment and is feeling better than ever.
The black puppy, Beetles, is awaiting surgery to remove her damaged eye. But in the meantime, both babies are soaking up all the love they’re receiving at the vet clinic.

Once Beetles receives her surgery, it’ll only be a matter of time before both puppies are healthy enough to be adopted, hopefully together.
It’s hard to believe that such an adorable pair of pups could be abandoned, but after being found just in time, they have a wonderful future ahead.
“They’re just little babies starting out their lives,” Hall told The Dodo.
To help dogs like Wonton and Beetles get the care they need, you can donate to Logan’s Legacy 29 here.
