He was barely hanging on 💔

In the wake of the floods that devastated Central Texas this week, many are homeless and grieving, navigating the aftermath of a storm that took over 90 lives.

Among those affected are displaced pets, who now wander the debris, searching tirelessly for their families. One such pet, a sweet dog named Superman, found himself huddled in a pile of wreckage, waiting for a miracle.

Tragically, Superman’s person passed away during the storm. With no one looking out for the pup, his chances of survival were slim.

When local search and rescue crews saw Superman’s desperate face, they knew they had to help. At first, Superman cowered from his heroes. But with some gentle persuasion, he began to relax.

“Fearful and aching after being swept away from his home, Superman was hesitant to trust the search and rescue crews,” Texas rescue group Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) wrote in a Facebook post. “With patience and a bit of dog-whispering, volunteers were finally able to earn his trust and safely remove Superman from the scene.”

APA! crew members brought Superman to their medical team for a full examination. Then they connected with his loved ones and made a plan to aid their reunion.

“His surviving family, now grieving and having lost everything, are doing everything they can to hold on to the last piece of their past that remains — Superman,” APA! wrote.

Superman’s family members are still getting back on their feet and need time to decompress and rebuild before they can welcome the pup into their home. Luckily, Superman doesn’t have to worry. For now, he’s living with an experienced foster parent who’s happy to take care of him until his family feels ready.

Thanks to so many dedicated rescue volunteers, Superman is safe and looking forward to brighter days ahead.

Texas locals can help APA! with flood relief efforts by signing up for volunteer opportunities using this form. For those outside of Texas, donations can be made via the APA! donation page.

APA! team members are grateful to everyone who’s donated and volunteered already. In moments like these, every bit counts.

“[The floods have] been devastating for all living beings,” APA! president and CEO Dr. Ellen Jefferson said in the post. “So many people are searching for their pets that are the last connection they might have to a lost family member. Pets are so intertwined in this saga, and it’s so important.”

“I saw them shivering.”

By Alana Francis-Crow

In January of last year, Houston got hit with unusually freezing weather. As night fell and temperatures began to drop, Andrea Soliz noticed a dog wandering around her workplace’s warehouse.

As she looked more closely, Soliz realized that there wasn’t just one dog, but two: a mama and her tiny puppy.
