The Puppy Who Saved Himself: How Fango Exposed His Own Kidnapping.

Posted on September 15, 2025

Dogs are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and ability to sense when something is wrong. But for Fango, a five-month-old Australian Shepherd from Buckingham, Quebec, his sharp instincts and determination may have saved his life — and reunited him with the family who thought they had lost him forever.

A Morning of Panic

It began like any other Monday morning. Fango’s owner, Josée Francoeur, let him out into her fenced backyard around 9 a.m. to relieve himself. She expected him to come bounding back to the door minutes later, tail wagging, tongue lolling in a smile.

But when she peeked outside, the yard was empty. No Fango.

Panic set in quickly. The gate was still closed. There was no hole under the fence. Her puppy had vanished.

Josée searched frantically around the neighborhood, calling his name, asking passersby if they had seen him. Nothing. She burst into tears as she walked block by block. By mid-morning, she had posted missing dog alerts on Facebook and on the local humane society’s website. She also contacted police, who filed an official missing dog report.

The thought that someone might have taken him felt impossible — but as the hours passed, hope dwindled.

A Dog Walks Into a Store

Meanwhile, in Gatineau, about 30 minutes away, employees at the pet store Au Royaume d’Animaux were going about their day. Among them was Yves Goodwin, a dog trainer with a sharp eye and years of experience.

Suddenly, a couple walked in with a young Australian Shepherd. At first glance, nothing seemed unusual — until Yves noticed the dog’s unusual behavior.

The puppy was barking insistently, pushing, pawing, and clearly trying to get his attention. It was as though the dog was trying to speak.

The couple explained that they had “found” the dog in the woods and were thinking about keeping him. They said the woman, who was in poor health, wanted a support animal but couldn’t afford to buy one.

But as Yves questioned them, red flags piled up.

  • They couldn’t answer the most basic questions: How old was the dog? Was he neutered? What food did he eat? How much did they pay for him?
  • Their vague answers and evasions only deepened Yves’s suspicions.
  • Meanwhile, the dog kept barking and refusing to settle, even when offered biscuits.

Something wasn’t right.

A Familiar Face

Then came the moment of revelation. As Yves studied the dog, recognition dawned.

“I realized I had trained this puppy before,” he recalled later. “I knew him. This wasn’t just any dog.”

Taking a chance, Yves shouted the name: “Fango, come!”

Instantly, the pup’s demeanor changed. His ears perked. His tail wagged. He bounded toward Yves, as if shouting with his whole body: “It’s me! I’m not their dog!”

The truth was clear. This was no chance “found” dog. This was Fango — the missing puppy whose family was frantically searching for him.

Social Media Confirms the Worst

While Yves was engaging the couple, another employee had already started scrolling social media for missing dog alerts. Within minutes, they found Francoeur’s post with a photo of Fango, describing how he had vanished that very morning.

Everything lined up: the timing, the description, the markings. The dog in the store was indeed the stolen puppy.

Confrontation and Pressure

Yves confronted the couple. Onlookers gathered, sensing something was wrong. With the crowd watching, the couple hesitated. Finally, under pressure, they surrendered the dog.

“They didn’t want to admit anything,” Yves said. “But surrounded by people, they had no choice but to hand him over.”

Yves immediately called Josée Francoeur with the news: “We found Fango.”

A Reunion Filled with Tears

When Josée answered the call, she could hardly speak. “I can’t talk about it without crying,” she said later. Relief and disbelief washed over her all at once.

After hours of despair, her puppy was safe. Thanks to his own persistent barking, the quick instincts of Yves and his colleagues, and the reach of social media, Fango’s nightmare was over.

The Aftermath

Josée wasted no time filing a police report, determined to hold the couple accountable. “I don’t want to cause them problems,” she explained. “But they need to know the consequences of their actions. They took my child.”

Police in Gatineau confirmed they were investigating. Before charges could be filed, however, they would need to prove the couple intentionally stole Fango, rather than merely “finding” him and keeping him.

In the meantime, the Outaouais SPCA issued a reminder to all pet owners: microchip your pets. Fango had not been microchipped, which made his recovery more difficult. In fact, the couple had reportedly tried to register him at the shelter earlier that morning under a new name. Had the microchip been in place, his ownership would never have been in doubt.

Lessons From Fango’s Story

The tale of Fango is more than just a near-miss. It’s a powerful reminder of three things:

  1. Dogs are smarter than we think. Fango barked, pushed, and pleaded until someone recognized that he didn’t belong with the couple. His persistence saved him.
  2. Community matters. Social media posts, local shelters, and watchful employees created the chain of events that reunited Fango with his family.
  3. Preparedness saves lives. Microchipping and vigilance can prevent heartache and make stolen pets easier to recover.

Back Home Where He Belongs

Today, Fango is safely back in Buckingham with Josée, where he belongs. She still shudders to think of what might have happened if fate — and her puppy’s own determination — hadn’t intervened.

“Imagine,” she said, tears in her eyes. “If those people hadn’t gone to the pet store, I would have lost my dog forever.”

Instead, thanks to Fango’s voice, Yves’s instincts, and a community’s compassion, this story ends with joy.

For Josée, the wag of her puppy’s tail now feels like the most precious sound in the world.
